xp_CmdShell is a powerful SP if used with care. You can execute executable files (e.g. *.com, *.exe and *.bat) using xp_CmdShell however there is a little trick when executing executable file.

When you use the the following command you will get an error

'C:\myscript.bat' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Solution:
You have to specify a command processor in the string you pass to xp_cmdshell. Use cmd.exe for NT/W2K and command.com for Win9x.

For WinNT/2k/XP/2003

Click here to copy the following block
EXEC master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'cmd /C "C:\myscript.bat"'

For Win9x

Click here to copy the following block
EXEC master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'command /C "C:\myscript.bat"'
